Prince Edward County – Ontario
From the first moment the Prince Edward County reminded me of another very similar part of Canada. Whether it is nature, land, architecture, lifestyle or its past, P.E.I. reminded me of the region known as Eastern Townships or in French Cantons-de-l’Est, located in southeastern Quebec (map).
Booth regions were first settled a few centuries ago by loyalists who had left U.S.A. (map) during the or right after the war of Independence in the 18th ct. Settlers who wanted to stay loyal to the British crown looked up to the North.
Since, a few centuries went by but the way of life has been preserved and cultivated for everyone’s benefit. Prince Edward County today is a rich variety of country living all of us are searching for when looking for near by escape from the urban chaos. It takes just under two hours drive from Toronto or around four hours from Montreal (travel notes) to enjoy the sand and the beach.
Prince Edward County is located on the shore of Lake Ontario and it is best known for its Sandbanks Provincial Park and its seven kilometers long sandy beach, as well as its sand dunes.
But, there is much more to the Prince Edward County than beaches and beautiful camp grounds right on them.
Once settled in whatever accommodations you choose during your stay in Prince Edward County, if not staying in town you should definitely visit picturesque Picton, explore its main street, crafts and artisan shops and enjoy a meal in one of the gourmet restaurants.

There is plenty to explore by driving or biking on the quiet roads crisscrossing the county. Around every corner there is another farm of some sort, there are local cheese producers, apple orchards, strawberry fields, vineyards, B&B’s, Inn’s, cottages, even a Drive In movie theater – Is out there still any other that you know off?

Sandbanks offers plenty of what far away sun destinations offer but with one difference, its around the corner. So, do not pass an opportunity to enjoy water sports, swimming, sunbathing, fishing, even an early morning jog on the sand dunes.
Or, spend your days relaxing in the shade of a tree with a book just a few steps away from the Sandbanks campgrounds, located right there meters away from the beach.
Hope you’ll have as much fun as we had!
