Prince Edward County – Ontario
Prince Edward County is located on the shores of the Lake Ontario and it is best known for its Sandbanks Provincial Park and its seven kilometers long sandy beach, as well as its sand dunes.
From the first moment the Prince Edward County reminded me of another very similar part of Canada. Whether it is nature, land, architecture, lifestyle or its past, P.E.I. reminded me of the region known as Eastern Townships or in French Cantons-de-l’Est, located in southeastern Quebec (map).

Booth regions were first settled a few centuries ago by loyalists who had left U.S.A. (map) during the or right after the war of Independence in the 18th ct. Settlers who wanted to stay loyal to the British crown looked up to the North.
Since, a few centuries went by but the way of life has been preserved and cultivated for everyone’s benefit. Prince Edward County today is a rich variety of country living city folks search for when looking at weekend or vacation oasis away from urban hustle. It takes just under two hours drive from Toronto or around four hours from Montreal (travel notes) to enjoy its beach and outdoor activities.

There is much more to the Prince Edward County than Sandbanks beach and beautiful campgrounds right on them.
Once settled in your preferred choice of accommodation, either a cabin, Airbnb, near by hotel or in one off the campgrounds inside the park, visit picturesque town Picton, explore its main street, crafts and artisan shops and enjoy a meal in one of the gourmet restaurants.

There is also plenty to explore by driving or biking on the quiet roads crisscrossing the county. Around every curve there is another farm of some sort, local cheese producers, apple orchards, strawberry fields, vineyards, B&B’s, Inn’s, cottages, even a Drive In movie theater – Is it out there still any other left that you know off?

Sandbanks offers plenty of what far away sun destinations offer but with one difference, it’s just around the corner for millions of Canadians. Do not pass an opportunity to spend the weekend or a week and enjoy water sports, swimming, sunbathing, fishing, even an early morning jog on the sandy beach not that far from where you may be living.

Sandbanks campgrounds are located right behind the treeline, yards away from the sand, sun and in mid summer warm waters of the Lake Ontario. For a camping spot you may need to book a spot months in advance. Good luck!
Hope you’ll have as much fun as we had!
